What are the actual psychological triggers within propaganda that enable the state to maintain the belief of political authority?

Philip Bodeswell joins me to discuss his groundbreaking online book, “The Narcissist State”.

Few thinkers have explored the eerie parallels between living breathing narcissists, and how statist propaganda manages to manipulate minds. No, it’s not narcissistic Bond villains rubbing their hands in glee. It’s the natural systemic outcome of statism. How the myth of political authority makes our minds vulnerable to well-understood narcissistic dynamics.

But it’s not merely descriptive. Philip seeks to empower the individual…to become aware of the dynamic and be mentally on guard. And he provides useful guidance that parallels the healthy ways to deal with real-life narcissism: exit strategies.

In this episode I explain the foundational reasoning and evidence that supports one of the most profound White Pills to come out of my podcast: that we have already started the transition to a free society. And that this is not only tangibly evident, but virtually unstoppable.

First, I spend time explaining how there are different interpretations of the term “White Pill”. A common one, which I reject, is that it means a generally optimistic attitude...a “glass half full” perspective. Sorry, that’s not what qualifies, in my book. Rather, my White Pills are based on evidence and logic. In other words, real world reasons for hope. At least for me, this is a more solid grounding in declaring something a White Pill.

Then I explain exactly why we have commenced the transition to a free society. Not based on an optimistic feeling. But based on real world empirical evidence, basic psychology, logical thinking, and solid cause-and-effect reality.

The main takeaways from my Larken Rose interview are: propaganda is failing the State, and there’s a massive White Pill here. Namely, that it represents the start of the transition to a free society. It’s a historically unique situation, but it’s not simply its uniqueness that leads to that conclusion. Nor is it some general optimistic sensibility on the part of Larken or myself. Indeed, the conclusion is rooted in a reasoned, logical, and empirical analysis.

Philip is one of the very few who have provided some pushback on some of the points, and I applaud this. In doing so, he acknowledges that the conclusions are not mere assertion.

Philip and I are actually in agreement about the fundamental dynamics that will lead to free societies, and thus, the details of his pushback amount to minor disagreements…quibbles over the details, perhaps. Nonetheless, they connect to the whole, and deserve a reply.

Philip identified a few assumptions from my interview, which were shown as quoted items in his article. They follow, in bold below. (I should point out that these are not direct quotes from my Larken interview. These are Philip’s paraphrasing or restatements of the interview content).

“Nothing like this new information paradigm has ever happened before.”

He correctly pointed out that tech cuts both ways. Absolutely true. However, the qualitative difference today is the enormous degree of decentralized information flow. So yes, the State can use high-tech as another propaganda tool. But this truth does not change the decentralization dynamic. The State has an uphill struggle to reverse this dynamic. Remember, for the State to be successful at leveraging tech, it would have to place us back to where people do not have today’s control over their content consumption. This is imaginable, but highly implausible.

“People are questioning the ‘authority’ of the State like never before.”

This is true, but not the main driver of the new dynamic. Rather, what is highly significant is the increase in general skepticism about the State and its major institutional handmaidens. This increase is quite evident and tangible. Yes, there is some outright questioning of the authority of the State, and it’s a plus. But it’s the growing generalized skepticism that counts for more. Refer to my “bucket” analogy around 1 hr, 4 minutes in.

Philip mentions COVID, and uses it as a black-pill example demonstrating mass public compliance.

We should be cautious about using COVID in such argumentation. Sure, it happened. The problem is, the compliance waned. No, it didn’t disappear. But it withered, even if only moderately.

That’s significant: all it took was that moderate erosion, to cause the State to back off, about 2 years into COVID. I don’t think any of us are so naive as to think the State did this out of the goodness of its heart. I think we should all be grounded enough in reality to realize that if the State could have continued its mandates to this very day, we’d have them to this very day. They backed off for one main reason: the small increase in skepticism of the COVID measures was enough to see them as unsustainable. It didn’t take an Ancap takeover; it didn’t take an increase in libertarian outreach. All it took was a upward notch in skepticism. That’s a significant White Pill.

“Once this train leaves the station there’s no stopping it.”

That’s also a paraphrase, but it accurately conveys the sentiment.

Philip countered this sentiment with “History says otherwise”. However, it’s not possible for history to say anything about this, one way or the other. We do not have a historical counterpart to today’s dynamic of technology providing an utterly decentralized, near-global, real-time information environment.

But history does provide tangentially related examples. The secession of the colonies from England; institutionalized slavery; the Soviet Union. All were major changes away from entrenched institutions. And all were virtually unstoppable once they reached a tipping point. And by the way, in historical terms, they all happened quickly.

Philip provides many examples (e.g., the Levellers) to show how resistance does not at all lead to the collapse of authority, and instead is often crushed by it. This has merit, but is narrow in scope. Yes, we have hundreds of historical examples of resistance that ultimately failed…in which brutal measures befell the rebels. These are not counter arguments to my main point. They merely illustrate that bullies often win.

However, examples like the colonies, slavery and the Soviet Union are distinctive. In each case, the outright legitimacy of the underlying institution was questioned.

Not so in the overwhelming examples of resistance, where internal changes to the existing institution were advocated (as Philip indicates, The Levellers were “pushing for wider suffrage, a written constitution, and limits on arbitrary power”). Notice: they were not questioning the underlying legitimacy of the government that was ruling them.

But the colonies regarded the crown’s authority as illegitimate. The abolitionists regarded slavery as illegitimate. The anti-Soviet sentiment regarded the Soviet authority as illegitimate.

To be sure, this is not to suggest that all such declarations-of-illegitimacy succeed. Again, bullies often crush their victims. But if and when a tipping point is reached (in general skepticism, outright rebellion, or anything in between), the trend becomes all but unstoppable.

This is where Philip’s insights are particularly valuable. He correctly points out that targeting authority tends to give the State a central attack point (and a target for the majority to denounce). I don’t believe this makes resistance utterly ineffective. But I also do not think it’s an essential factor. What is the essential factor is skepticism, small or large.

His specific example of quiet withdrawal via parallel institutions is the most organic, emergent and resilient of the skepticism-driven pathways. But regardless of the particular ways it plays out, underlying it all is skepticism. Parallel institutions, quiet disregard, mockery, mild disobedience, and outright resistance, are all examples of how skepticism instantiates itself.

It’s a meta-discussion about communication itself – and how it intersects with libertarianism.

I think you’ll enjoy this broad give-and-take with author and teacher Pavel Slutskiy, who I’m flattered to say, happens to be one of our long time subscribers on The White Pillbox.

We discuss the importance of communication in libertarian thinking; purpose and intention; and cultural norms versus legal systems. Pavel shows us the nuances of speech acts that can be considered aggressive, such as threats or ordering others to commit aggression.

Pavel’s books:

“Communication and Libertarianism” (2021), the book which was referred by David Gordon as “…an outstanding contribution to both libertarian political philosophy and communication theory… and the most comprehensive work on communication issues in libertarian theory ever published”

His follow-up book develops an epistemological alternative to empiricism for studying communication: “Philosophical Foundations of Communication Studies: a Praxeological Approach” (2024)

Pavel is Associate Professor in Communication Management at the Faculty of Communication Arts, Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok. He is Associate Professor in Public Relations at Saint-Petersburg State University — the first higher education institution in the country to offer a programme in PR. Dr. Slutskiy earned his PhD in Journalism (Political Science) from Saint-Petersburg State University. Since 2014, he has lived and worked in Thailand. His research interests include political and legal philosophy of communication, communication theory, philosophy of language, cross-cultural communication, strategic communication and public relations.
